A scanned bank statement can look perfect on screen. Every word is legible. Every number appears in the transcript. Yet the workflow can still assign a closing balance to the wrong period, detach a value from its label, or flatten a table into a list that no downstream system can trust.
The OCR worked. The document did not become usable data.
That distinction sits at the centre of intelligent document processing. OCR identifies characters. Document intelligence must also interpret structure, relationships and context before a financial-services workflow can act on the result.
OCR answers a narrow question: what text appears on this page?
That is useful, but financial documents carry meaning beyond their words. A bank statement has periods, account holders, balances and transaction rows. An identity document has fields whose position and labels matter. An invoice has line items, tax, totals and payment terms. A claim form connects people, incidents, dates and supporting documents.
Research behind LayoutLM showed why text alone is not enough for document understanding. Layout and visual features help models interpret forms, receipts and other document images. Research on Donut also identified a common risk in traditional pipelines: an OCR error can pass into the next stage and distort the structured output.
The same number can mean a balance, transaction amount, interest rate, policy limit or invoice total. Its meaning comes from where it sits, which label points to it, which table row contains it and which page or document it belongs to.
Microsoft's document-intelligence taxonomy makes this distinction practical. Its Read capability extracts printed and handwritten text. Layout processing adds tables and document structure. Classification determines the document type. Extraction maps values into labelled or strongly typed fields.
That wider job is why Extract AI should be understood as horizontal document intelligence for financial services, not a claims-only tool. Claims is one use case. The same problem appears in onboarding, lending, compliance, finance operations and account servicing.
Consider digital onboarding. Copying a name and ID number does not complete customer due diligence. FATF guidance treats identification and verification as part of a wider risk-based process. Extracted data must still be checked against the document, business rules and the institution's controls.
The same principle applies elsewhere. A lender must know whether a figure is income or an account balance. A finance team must distinguish an invoice total from a line item. A claims operation must connect each document to the right case and flag missing or conflicting information.

NIST's AI Risk Management Framework reinforces the wider standard: trustworthy systems need validity, reliability, transparency and accountability. For document operations, that means measuring the structured output and its downstream consequences, not celebrating a clean transcript.
OCR is a reading layer. Intelligent document processing is an understanding and workflow layer.
Financial-services teams do not need more text trapped in another file. They need structured, validated and traceable data that can move safely into onboarding, lending, compliance, claims and finance operations.
